Whether called fate, destiny or the hand of God, slender threads are at work bringing coherence and continuity to our lives and, over time, they weave a remarkable tapestry. Explore the roles of fate and destiny, as well as rational planning, in shaping contemporary life. What are these slender threads? Being in a particular place at just the right time, meeting someone who steers us in an unforeseen direction, the unexpected appearance of work, money or inspiration? Such patterns give meaning to our experiences, and once we recognize the power of the invisible threads we can stop worrying about trying to control everything. This gives life an intensity, a sense of safety, and it helps us to experience more contentment and happiness.

Ordinary human consciousness is—at the same time as being a form of awareness, sensitivity and advancement—a form of ignorance. The ordinary everyday consciousness from which we operate leaves out more than it takes in—things that are terribly important, things that, if we could know them, would go a long way toward relieving our anxieties and fears. Learn how we can expand our awareness to include those things that are left out so that we have a deepened experience of life and more access to know what is profound and mysterious in the depths of the world around us.

Fall 2018 Program: Consciousness and the Perils of Polarization with Richard J. Sweeney

    9:30 AM - 1:30 PMSt. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 33 W. Dixon, Dayton OH 45419

Late in life C.G. Jung expressed his belief that the sole purpose of human existence is “to create more and more consciousness” so as “to kindle a light in the darkness of mere being.” In this program we will examine the nature and importance of consciousness, particularly in today’s world. To this end, we will consider the development and degrees of consciousness and explore frequent obstacles to consciousness. We will probe Jung’s view that all psychological symptoms and neuroses derive from conflict or polarization within the psyche. This will lead to a reflection upon social consciousness and the problem of polarization within the collective psyche today. Our aim will be to suggest how the development of consciousness is both a personal and a societal enterprise. The presentation will combine lecture with the use of case examples, dream material, recent research and some interaction with participants.

Reimagining God and Religion: A Jungian Perspective with Jerry R. Wright

    9:30 a.m.- 1:30 p.m.St. Paul’s Episcopal Church 33 W. Dixon, Dayton 45419

*This event was rescheduled from January 19th

We are very pleased to announce the long-awaited return of Jerry R. Wright for our Winter 2019 program.

How can humans bring fresh imagination to the meanings of god and religion that will satisfy both the modern mind and ancient soul?

This is the religious challenge of our time. With the necessary demise of traditional religious paradigms dependent on projection of our psychic content, we are called to two simultaneous sacred endeavors: to eulogize, bury, and grieve the theistic and monotheistic god-images and the religions dependent on them; and, secondly, to reimagine god and religion.
